Tick tock, tick tock, BOOM! Mt. Vesuvius blew its top in 79AD, burying and destroying Pompeii and Herculaneum. And that was after an earthquake in 63AD nearly leveled the place. There were about 20,000 inhabitants in Pompeii at the time, and about 90% had managed to get out. Completely abandoned after that, it was rediscovered in1594, but excavation didn't really begin until 1748.
